Finding peace in the storm

Navigating life with epilepsy and OCD can be challenging, but you're not alone. Here, I share my coping strategies and invite you to join the conversation.

Managing stress, epilepsy, and OCD

Epilepsy and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) often feel like a difficult duo to manage, especially when stress is thrown into the mix. I've found that the heightened anxiety from OCD can sometimes trigger my epilepsy, creating a challenging cycle. Does this resonate with anyone else? I'm eager to hear if others experience similar struggles.

You are not alone

One of the most important things I've learned is that community and shared understanding can make a world of difference. If you're navigating similar challenges, please know that you are not alone. This space is intended to be a welcoming place where you can share your stories, ask questions, and find a listening ear. I'll always do my best to respond to non-medical queries related to epilepsy or OCD.

Learning from unexpected moments

Life with epilepsy can sometimes lead to unexpected and even painful experiences. In March 2026, I was meticulously trying to get the water levels just right for my Japanese noodles. I stared so intently at the kettle that it brought on an absence seizure, resulting in boiling hot water pouring all over my leg, stomach, and hand. This led to a hospital visit and a skin graft. The scars and memories are upsetting, but there's a silver lining: I'm now banned from using the kettle, meaning my partner has to make her own tea and trust me she likes a lot of tea! While this story is a painful reminder, it also highlights the importance of adapting and finding humour where you can. Do you have any advice on managing epilepsy and OCD together? All suggestions are welcome!
