A new chapter: Birmingham to Witney

Having lived in Birmingham all my life, moving down south was quite a big change. I found the people not as welcoming, and of course, my accent wasn't quite the same, which was quickly recognised when we went out to bars and restaurants.

Finding my feet in Witney

I've lived in Witney for nearly 9 years and I eventually feel like I belong, but I really felt out of place and alone at the beginning.

Battling loneliness in a new town

Not only did the move present cultural adjustments, but when my wife goes to work every day, it's just me alone in the house most days, which can get quite lonely. It's a different kind of challenge, one that many who move for work or marriage might understand.

My little secret to connection

Sometimes, if I get bored, I've started going out by myself. And if someone asks me why I'm out, I sometimes tell them it's my birthday, even if it's not. I know it's naughty, but I do like having strangers sing 'Happy Birthday' to me in August when my birthday is in April!

"Has anyone else had to move somewhere new due to work or like me, because of marriage? It’s a unique journey."
